The GLAAD List
The Black List is proud to partner with GLAAD on the fourth edition of the GLAAD List, highlighting the most promising unmade feature film scripts with a protagonist from the LGBTQ community.
Unlike The Black List, an annual survey of Hollywood executives' favorite unproduced screenplays, The GLAAD List is not voted upon via a survey; rather, it is curated by GLAAD based on a pool of the highest-rated scripts provided by The Black List that feature lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and/or queer (LGBTQ) characters.
Writers, filmmakers, and creators are invited to submit a feature film script for consideration by uploading it to The Black List website beginning on February 28, 2024. Submitted feature scripts should include fair, accurate and inclusive LGBTQ representation and an LGBTQ protagonist, a bold and original story, and pass the Vito Russo Test.
Fee Waivers:
Update: as of 3/29/2024 all available fee waivers for the GLAAD List have been distributed. If you have not received one in the past year, we encourage you to explore our general fee waivers.
400 fee waivers are available to submitting writers thanks to AMC Networks! When submitting your script for GLAAD List consideration, you will be able to apply for one fee waiver per submitting writer.
Fee waivers will be equally distributed across all 2024 diversity lists and distributed at the discretion of diversity list partners, AMC Networks and the Black List. Please follow the link below for more information about how to apply for a diversity list fee waiver.
GLAAD List Requirements:
Only feature film scripts are eligible for the 2024 GLAAD List.
Submitted feature scripts should include fair, accurate and inclusive LGBTQ representation and an LGBTQ protagonist, a bold and original story, and pass the Vito Russo Test.
Scripts provided by The Black List will be evaluated by GLAAD using the following criteria:
Fair, accurate, and inclusive LGBTQ representation
Boldness and originality of the story
Potential impact of the completed project
Overall quality of the script
Passes the Vito Russo Test
GLAAD’s selected scripts will represent the most promising stories from the pool provided.
To pass the Vito Russo Test, the following must be true:
The film contains a character that is identifiably lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer (LGBTQ).
That character must not be solely or predominantly defined by their sexual orientation or gender identity (i.e. the character is comprised of the same sort of unique character traits commonly used to differentiate straight/non-transgender characters from one another).
The LGBTQ character must be tied into the plot in such a way that their removal would have a significant effect. Meaning they are not there to simply provide colorful commentary, paint urban authenticity, or (perhaps most commonly) set up a punchline. The character should matter.
Timeline:
Submissions will be open from February 28, 2024 until July 1, 2024.
Writers selected for the GLAAD List will be notified of their placement in late summer 2024 with a public and social media announcement to follow.
The Black List is proud to partner with GLAAD for a fourth time to celebrate the most exciting unmade LGBTQ stories! We will notify selected writers directly - thank you for your patience in the meantime.
